The challenge

Naked Nutrition sells protein powders and supplements with short ingredient lists, under the line "nothing to hide." Its subscribe-and-save program on Shopify ran on Bold Subscriptions.

The brand wanted to move its subscriptions to ReCharge and get a better buy box on product pages while it was at it. The hard part was the people already subscribed. Their payment details sat behind Bold, every one of them had a next charge date, and none of them could be charged twice or skipped during the switch.

The approach

Naked Nutrition worked with DYODE on ad-hoc development support. The brand sent requests through our help desk, we estimated each one, and nothing started until the brand approved it. Every change was built in its own Shopify theme preview for the brand to test before it went live.

For the migration we split the launch in two. The new ReCharge buy box went live first, so new subscribers signed up on ReCharge while Bold kept billing the existing ones. The subscriber data moved after that, once the brand had a fresh export from Bold.

The new buy box

We designed and built a new purchase area for product pages: a clear choice between a one-time purchase and a subscription, built on ReCharge. Each flavor keeps its own product page, as the brand wanted.

Not everything Naked Nutrition sells is a subscription product. Shaker bottles, t-shirts and sample packs needed a plain Add to Cart, so we made the buy box fall back to one whenever a product isn't set up in ReCharge.

The subscriber migration

We rebuilt Bold's subscription rules in ReCharge, then worked through Bold's exports until we had one with the customer IDs ReCharge needs to match each subscriber to their payment details. We converted that file to ReCharge's import format and ReCharge checked it before anything was loaded.

The check flagged problem rows: bad addresses, charge dates already in the past, and flavors that had been discontinued. We took each one to the brand, which chose to leave the discontinued flavors and long-inactive subscriptions out. ReCharge ran the import with the store on hold, so no renewal could fire until the brand had reviewed the data.

Before switching on, we pulled a second Bold export to catch anyone who had changed a subscription after the first one. Customers Bold had billed in the meantime had their next charge dates moved in a bulk update, so nobody paid twice.

The results

Naked Nutrition's existing subscribers moved from Bold to ReCharge, and new customers subscribed through the new buy box from the day it launched. Products sold one time only stayed buyable throughout.

With the data confirmed and the charge dates settled, the brand switched off Bold Subscriptions and removed the app.
