The challenge
O'Neill makes wetsuits, boardshorts, swimwear and surf apparel, and its US store ran on Magento. Before any build started, DYODE reviewed the site and found pages that were slow to load and getting slower, many visitors leaving within seconds, and mobile shoppers converting well below desktop.
Navigation and category filters were hard to use on a phone, product recommendations rarely changed, and the store read as a product grid more than a surf brand.

The approach
We started as consultants. DYODE wrote the requirements for the new store, going page by page through what O'Neill's site needed: navigation, category filters and sorting, product pages, cart, checkout, promotions and back-office tools. For each one we decided whether Shopify handled it natively, an app covered it, or it needed custom development, and costed the options.
That document became the plan for moving to Shopify Plus, and DYODE ran the project from there, tracking every task with O'Neill's team through testing and launch.
The Shopify Plus build
We set up the Shopify Plus store on a theme and reworked it for O'Neill: a mega menu, filters that take more than one choice, sold-out sizes kept visible but greyed out, product details moved under Add to Cart, and Save for Later in place of a wishlist on product pages and in the cart.
We cut steps out of buying, too. The cart icon goes straight to the cart, quantities update on their own, and shoppers can go to checkout without making an account first. A dealer locator links from the footer and from wetsuit product pages.
Data, integrations and redirects
We migrated the store's data and connected the systems O'Neill already ran on: Full Circle, Signifyd for fraud screening, Zendesk, Reflektion, Google Analytics and the marketing pixels. Checkout took Shopify Payments, PayPal and Amazon Pay, and employee discounts came across too.
Magento URLs didn't match Shopify's, so we mapped the old category and product links to their new collections and products, imported them as 301 redirects, and worked through broken-link reports to catch the rest.
The results
O'Neill's US store moved off Magento and onto Shopify Plus, with its catalog, integrations and payment options in place and its old links pointing to the new pages.
Most of what the old site needed now came from Shopify itself or an app rather than custom code, and shoppers had fewer steps between a product and checkout. O'Neill's US store still runs on Shopify today.
